To protect biodiversity, Marieta Islands are closed to the public

Environmental security authorities have decided to prohibit tourist activities in the Marieta Islands from this May 9, seeking to protect the biodiversity of the area that was threatened by human presence on the islands. This prohibition will be for an indefinite period, it is estimated that the measure will be withdrawn once the factors that threaten the diversity of fauna and flora of the region disappear.

Alarm was triggered mainly due to coral reef degradation, according to Dr. Amilcar Cupul, this is not a new issue, degradation has been noticed since the 90s mainly due to climate change, however, current conditions show that a significant percentage of the reef seems affected,so new strategies to protect and restore this important element oceanic have been developed and will be implemented soon.
