Mexican authorities arrest important Leyva Cartel Leader

– The drug trafficker Edgar Valdez Villareal, alias “La Barbie,” one of the most wanted criminals in Mexico, was arrested today, officials said.

According to a spokesman for the Federal Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the drug trafficker was recently arrested between the State of Mexico and Morelos, near Mexico City.

The currently ongoing operation was launched by the Federal Police, although more details have not been disclosed.

The “La Barbie” whose nickname stems from his good-looks, is an American and in recent years has worked as chief of assassins for the Beltran Leyva cartel, one of the largest in the country.

After the death of Arturo Beltran Leyva the boss of the cartel in December after an Army operation, analysts say that“La Barbie” has been struggling against another faction to control the criminal organization.

On one side is Héctor Beltrán, alias “The Great”, and on the other Valdez Villarreal, according to the SSP.

The confrontation has created a wave of killings, mainly in the state of Guerrero (southern Mexico).

His name has appeared a lot in the media in the last months due to the contact he’s kept with his former colleagues and the cruelty of his activities.

Mexican federal prosecutors offered a reward of 30 million pesos ($2.26 million dollars) for information that could lead to his capture.
