– About 8,000 visitors and employees were evacuated from the British Museum in London today, after 10 guests complained of suffering eye and throat irritation, stated a spokeswoman for the museum.
Police said a number of people complained about a strange smell that had caused them irritation, so they proceeded to evacuate the building and officials searched the premises but could not find the source that had prompted these complaints, stating that they think it had something to do with the air conditioning system. The museum has since been declared safe, the spokeswoman said.
None of the affected people required medical attention.
The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m. ET) and the museum will reopen as normal on Sunday, the spokeswoman said.
