– “Venezuela has the right to develop peaceful nuclear power, but has also the obligation … not to transform it into weapons,” the president said.
Recently, Hugo Chavez signed an agreement in which Russia agrees to build a nuclear plant in Venezuela.
The deal sparked controversy around the world, while the U.S. announced it will watch the development very closely, something the Venezuelan leader described as “insolent.”
“We have a policy that applies to all countries and expect them to obey these policies,” Obama said, referring to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
The U.S. president added that Venezuela should act “responsibly” in matters related to nuclear technology and reiterated that they are interested in an “improved” relationship with the South American country.
“We have no interest in increasing friction between Venezuela and the U.S., or between Venezuela and its neighbors, but Venezuela must act responsibly.”
